Darjeeling Toy Train
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is the single most attraction of Darjeeling. Commencing from New Jalpaiguri in the plains and ending in Darjeeling hills, the railway passes through diverse landscapes covering various altitudes. The trains of Darjeeling Himalayan railway are run on meter gauge and pulled by steam engines. They are fondly called “Toy Train”. Darjeeling Himalayan railway was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in the year nineteen thousand nine hundred and ninety nine. It was only the second railway to have accorded this status after Simmering Railway of Austria.
Darjeeling Himalayan railway was built between eighteen thousand seventy nine and eighteen thousand eighty one. It is about eighty six kilometers long. The elevation range is from hundred meters in New Jalpaiguri to about two thousand and two hundred meters at Darjeeling.
Starting from New Jalpaiguri the real ascent of toy train starts from the station, Sukna. From here changes in demeanor of local people can be noticed. They start showing Mangloid features. From Sukna blue mountain ranges of the foot hills are visible and train rises from plains passing through tea gardens and forests of teak and sal.
From Rangtang station the beautiful view of wooded mountains can be had. As train moves on with view of tea gardens, tea factories and forests on sides and reaches Chunabati. It is more among the mountains and a panoramic view of deep valley and higher range of mountains are visible.
Tindharia, in old times, was the spot where travelers used to stop for tea. From here, one can get extensive view of hills. On leaving Tindharia, One can glimpse jagged rock faced mountains, Giddapahar, up ahead. Train will later pass through here. From Gayabari train leaves using “Zig Zag” reverses.
The train reaches Kurseong, Toong and Sonada. Then, it is Ghoom – the highest railway station in Darjeeling Himalayan railway. The famous Tiger Hills is the pinnacle of Ghoom. The glimpse of sunrise from Tiger Hills is high on reputation in the attractions of Darjeeling.
From Ghoom train descends towards Darjeeling. Batasia Loop is on the way. It offers a strategic viewpoint from where panoramic view of Mount Kanchen Junga can be had.
