About Lachen

The name Lachen means "Big Pass". Situated in the northern division of the state Sikkim, Lachen is one of the most attractive spots of the entire state. It is a beautiful small town which is incredibly famous for its Lachung Monastery

  • Thangu Valley Thangu is an ideal place for all the adventure seekers. Located at a distance of 30 km from Lachen, Thangu provides the perfect platform to enjoy tourist activities like trekking, rafting, etc. Thangu valley lies midway between Lachen and Gurudongmar lake, which is sacred to both Buddhism and Hinduism community.
  • Chopta Valley Chopta Valley is a nature's disguise, which tourist can behold during winters. Located at an altitude of 17000 ft, tourists are not allowed to travel further north as the border to china is very close. In the summers, Chopta Valley seems like a riot of colors. The valley is frozen during the winter and provides opportunity to walk over the frozen rivers.
  • Lachen Monastery Referred as the launching Gompa and was originally built in 1806. It shelters the community's religious beliefs, with allegiance to the Nyingmapa sect of Mahayana Buddhism. Inside the monastery is placed the beautiful statue of guru Padmasambhava or guru Rinpochi.
  • Gurudongmar Lake Regarded as one of the sacred lakes by the Hindus and Buddhists. The surprising fact about this naturally beautiful lake is that it appears as milky in colour throughout the year, thus grabbing attention of lots of visitors from all over the world.
