Darjeeling or the ‘Queen of the Hills’ is a town and a municipality in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located in the lesser Himalaya at an elevation of 6,700 ft (2,042.2 m). It is noted for its tea industry, early morning sunrise and the spectacular views of Kanchenjunga, which can be seen during clear climatic conditions, the world's third-highest mountain, and the Darjeeling Himalayan railwayunesco world heritage site.


Places Of Interest :

  • Tiger Hill : Sunrise Point Situated at an altitude of 2590 meters (8482 ft.) And 11 kilometres from the town, has earned international fame for the magnificent view of the sunrise over the "Kanchenjunga". Even Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, is visible from here.
  • Batasia Loop: Gigantic loop for toy train to take a 360-degree turn. It was basically built to make it possible for the toy train to cut the deep ascend. It offers a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga range. A war memorial constructed in the memory of the brave sons of the soil who laid down their lives in the different wars since the independence of the nation adds to its attraction.
  • Ghoom Monastery : Ghum Monastery is the popular name of the Yiga Choeling Monastery located at Ghoom at an elevation of 8,000 feet. It is the first ever-Tibetan Buddhist Monastery to be built in the Darjeeling region.
  • Ropeway Cable Car One of the best ways to experience the panoramic views of Kanchenjunga that Darjeeling is so famous for is by taking a ride on the ropeway. It's also called the Rangeet valley cable car because of the spectacular view of the valley around the river little Rangeet.
  • Zoo : Established on the 14th of august 1958, the zoo was dedicated in the memory of Padmaja Naidu, former governor of West Bengal on the 21st november 1975. Considered as one of the best zoos in the country, it is the only centre that breeds the Tibetan wolf. Breeding programmes for the endangered red panda, snow leopard are also carried out at Pnhzp.
  • Himalayan Mountaineering Institute : The Himalayan mountaineering institute was set up following the successful ascent of the mount Everest-the highest peak in the world by the local hero Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and sir Edmund Hillary on 28 may 1953. It is the first mountaineering institute in the country.
  • Tenzing Rock : Tenzing rock, a gigantic natural rock in Darjeeling is named after Tenzing Norgay, the man who created history by climbing the Everest first time along with Edmund Hillary in 1953.
  • Happy Valley Tea Garden : Happy Valley Tea Garden is located just a kilometer away from the main town and is situated along 18 Lebong cart road (very near to the district magistrate's office) and offers tourist a refreshing ambience far from the otherwise noisy town.
  • Tibetan refugee help centre : After his holiness escaped from Tibet, thousands of Tibetan refugees came to reside in India. Darjeeling too became a home away from home for the Tibetans in exile. To rehabilitate the community a ten-member committee was formed in Darjeeling to organize a rehabilitation centre, which was known as "Tibetan refugee self-help centre". The centre was established on october 1, 1959 and the residents of the centre are today known for their handicrafts. The centre makes excellent carpets, woolen goods, woodwork, etc. Which are famous across the globe.
  • Japanese Temple : The temple is also known as the peace pagoda. It was made under the guidance of Nipponzan Myohoji, who was A Japanese Buddhist. Situated on the slopes of the Jalapahar Hill. The pagoda is the highest free structure in the town. It also showcases the four avatars of the Buddha.
  • Rock Garden & Ganga Maya : Situated 7 kms from town, rock garden and Ganga Maya Park has now developed into a very attractive picnic spot with natural waterfalls.
  • Lamahatta : Lamahatta has been developed as an eco-tourism place in late 2012. It is roadside mountain village, which has vast stretching forests of pines and the magnificent views of the Kanchenjunga and Teesta River.
  • White Water River Rafting : Although known as the queen of hills, Darjeeling is getting increasingly popular for several water sports and one that leads is white water rafting. River Teesta and Rangeet gush down the mountains of Darjeeling and create foaming white water and stretches with varying rapids that are excellent for rafting for both beginners and seasoned rafters.
  • Darjeeling Toy Train Joy Ride : Riding the toy train of Darjeeling Himalayan railways (DHR) has always remained a coveted experience to the tourists. Only few would let go such an opportunity and there is a clear reason why so. After all this toy train has been accorded the unesco world heritage status.
  • Paragliding : This is the closest you can get to flying like a bird and imagine you are flying with the Himalayan Mountains in the backdrop.
